Hosting and server log files

The website is hosted by Alfahosting GmbH, Edmund-von-Lippmann-Straße 13–15, 06112 Halle (Saale), Germany. When you visit a page, your browser sends technical data to the web server: your IP address, the date and time, the requested page or file, the referring page, and your browser and operating system. The server records these data in log files, which are needed to deliver the website and keep it secure, and deletes them automatically after about one week. The hosting provider’s control panel also compiles aggregate statistics from these log files (for example, the number of page views per day); they are not used to identify visitors.

The legal basis is my legitimate interest in the secure and reliable provision of this website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Alfahosting processes these data on my behalf (Art. 28 GDPR). See the Alfahosting privacy policy.

Content from other servers

  • Mathematical formulas: pages that contain formulas (some blog posts and the blog overview) load the formula renderer MathJax from jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net) and a small compatibility script from cdnjs (Cloudflare, Inc.) when the page opens. Your browser thereby sends your IP address and the name of the requested file to these networks. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in displaying formulas correctly (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). See the privacy policies of jsDelivr and Cloudflare.
  • Runnable R code: blog posts with code you can edit and run in your browser (e.g., the post on statistical power) load the R runtime webR and R packages from webr.r-wasm.org, repo.r-wasm.org and jsDelivr when the page opens. The code then runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
  • YouTube videos are not loaded until you click the play button. Only then does your browser connect to YouTube (Google Ireland Ltd.) in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). See Google’s privacy policy.

Interactive explainers in blog posts are part of this website and run in your browser without contacting other servers. Comments from the previous version of this website are shown as static text; there is no comment function.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR), and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. For requests concerning the server log files, or any other question about your data, please contact me at the address above.
